[ANGLING & HUNTING] BLISS, PAUL SOUTHWORTH. The Rye is the Sea. Together with a Prose Account of the Author's Experiences as a Novice Hunter and Angler, Entitled: Hunting Begins at Forty and Fishing Begins at Forty.
Bismark, N.D.: The Cirrus Company, 1936. First edition. Publisher's printed burlap sackcloth over boards. 10 x 8 inches. [12], 61, [3] pp.; "illustrations from the original rubber blocks by Harold J. Matthews." Sackcloth stained around spine and on rear board, head and tail of spine starting to fray, contents faintly dampstained.
An illustrated collection of poems, followed by two short accounts of the author's experiences as a novice hunter and angler. The physical aspects of the book are rather unusual: "It has been created as an experiment in handcraft... The burlap binding is the gunny-sack of agriculture. The bag of which this binding is part has held in its time wheat and corn. The paper used is ordinary wrapping paper. The binding was done by persons who have had their training in the Works Progress Administration library book repair projects. The press is an old style Chandler and Price." Heller 453; not in Bruns.
C Estate of Arnold 'Jake' Johnson
