NEW YORK, NY -- Doyle held a successful auction of Rare Books, Autographs & Maps on March 22, 2022. Featured were printed and manuscript Americana, maps of all regions, early printing and incunabula, fine bindings and library sets, fine printing and private press, travel and sport, science and technology, children’s and illustrated books, English literature and American literature. Also offered were original autograph manuscripts and letters, illustration art and memorabilia.

With competitive bidding, the sale totaled a successful $369,810, surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $233,110-357,340, with an impressive 90% sold by lot and 100% sold by value.

John Disturnell, Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Mejico, 1847

Highlighting the sale was a rare example of John Disturnell's Mapa de los Estados Unidos de Mejico of 1847 that achieved an exceptional $40,950, doubling its $15,000-25,000 estimate. This historically important map of Mexico, Texas and large portions of the United States was used in the Treaty of Hidalgo to end the Mexican War. Complicating the matter is the fact that as many as 18 variations of the "Revised edition" of the map were printed with seven "editions" issued in 1847 alone.

In Washington, the 7th edition of the 1847 "Revised edition" was appended to the American version of the Treaty of Hidalgo, while in Mexico the 12th edition of 1847 was appended. This led to some contemporary controversy and much bibliographical investigation. The present example matches Martin's 12th edition of the 1847 "Revised Edition," the same attached to the Mexican version of the Treaty.
