[ANTIGUA] WALSH, D. Autograph letter signed to James Scott regarding the loss of life and property damage due to a hurricane.
Antigua: 18 September 1772. 1 1/2 page autograph letter signed "D. Walsh" on the pages of a long watermarked bifolium, the letter addressed to James Scott in London, 12 1/2 x 8 inches (32 x 20 cm), usual folds, neat repair where opened, fine and dark overall.
A rare late 18th century letter from Antigua describing the devastation and loss of life in a hurricane: "The 31st of last month we had the most violent hurricane ever known; very few estates, if any, but what have felt the effects of it, many of them quite destroyed, several white people killed & a number of Negroes. The King's ships in English Harbor dismasted & many vessels lost. We are in sad distress for want of Negro provision ... St. Christopher has suffered as much if not more & the other islands very considerably..." The letter continues with a report that despite the great damage to buildings and the crop of sugar cane, "we lost only one Negro. Mr. Otto had five killed upon the spot," and closes with "I fear we shall have bloody work at St. Vincent. Six companies of our Regiment are gone thither."; Offered with a 1727 annual lease for property on the island, dated 13th July, 1727.
