Doyle New York held a sale of Rare Books and Autographs on October 28, 2009. The sale offered property in a variety of categories, including Americana, manuscripts, literary first editions, color plate books, livres d’artiste, original artwork, and maps. A special section of the sale showcased the Aeronautical Collection of William G. Gerhard. With competitive international bidding from buyers in the salesroom, on the telephones and via the Internet, the sale totaled $347,519, surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $177,700-268,100, with a surprisingly strong 97% sold by lot and 98% by value.

Original art for books and popular publications include two delightful original four-panel ink drawings by Charles Schulz for Peanuts, one of which is quite early, dated July 15, 1952. The auction also features a group of original drawings by Hablot K. Browne. "Phiz", from the collection of Valerie Browne Lester, his descendant and biographer. A very rare and unusual addition of American interest is an exceptional two-page Fraktur bookplate drawn by Johannes Ernst Spangenberg, the Easton Bible Artist.

There are a number of fine bindings, including sets, among which is a fine copy of the Mellstock Thomas Hardy, one of 500 signed sets, in dark blue morocco by the Scroll Bindery; a set of the first edition of Richard Burton's Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night ; the Works of Charles Dickens bound by Morrell in 36 volumes; and a copy of George Bernard Shaw's Saint Joan in a Riviere binding with a miniature by Miss C. B. Currie.
