. Philadelphia: Merrihew and Thompson, 1846-47-48. First edition. Edited by Abraham L. Pennock, Samuel Rhodes, and George Taylor. Three volumes in one with separate title pages and indexes for each volume, comprising Volume I, nos. 1-12; Volume II, nos. 1-12; Volume III with supplement leaf, nos. 1-12. Early leather backed boards, lacks upper cover. 10 x 6 1/4 inches (26 x 16 cm); 200, 288, 288 pp. Lacks upper board as noted, first leaves detached and with edgewear and toning, spotting and a few small stains but generally very clean.
A scarce anti-slavery periodical published under the motto "Whoso gives the motive, makes his brother's sin his own." The work was edited by the ardent Philadelphia abolitionists Abraham L. Pennock (a close associate of Whittier) and Quaker George W. Taylor (a leader in the Free-Produce movement). The articles within cover the debate over the expansion of slavery in the United States and prints early writings of Frederick Douglass. The work is rare; we trace only one copy at auction, which did not contain the third volume present here.
