. Basel: Eusebius Episcopius & Nicolae fratris haeredes, 1569. First edition. Vellum of the period, both covers with a central medallion in silver gilt, the upper with the initials V. K. H. and the date 1586, remains of fore-edge ties in green silk, vellum laced spine with fleurons, titled in manuscript, all edges red. 11 3/4 x 8 inches (30 x 20 cm); [820 pp.], collating [alpha]^(4), a-i^(6) k^(8) l-q^(6) r^(4) (r4 blank), A-Z^(6), 2A-2Z^(6), 22A-2D^(6)22E^(4). Binding soiled, upper corner chewed or torn, stumps of ties only remaining, some minor marginal worming to the first twenty leaves, but generally a clean copy, with an interesting verse about Ramus in an early hand on the front pastedown, further notes on the free endpaper, and occasional marginalia.
Ramus (1515-1572) was an important French humanist rhetorician, logician and pedagogue. He corresponded with John Dee on mathematics. He was killed during the St. Batholomew's Day massacres. Adams R123.
