Lot 172
[INDIA-HUNTING] A short Journal of Twenty Days Tiger Shooting on the R.[iver] Godavery 140 miles north of Secunderabad, the Deccan.
[Caption title at head]. Modern black cloth clamshell case with an attractive "tiger-stripe" interior created with onlaid cloth. 8 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches (21 x 13.5 cm); 24 pp. (the last blank); written on pale salmon paper in black ink a strong, neat and legible hand. Neat restorations to the folds on the first sheet.
The shooting party consisted of Captain Hanbury (Royal Artillery); Captain George Lee; Lieutenant Dacres Thomas; and Lieutenant F. Arthur Aylmer. The party convened on March 15th, 1872, and travelled to the Godavery [Godavari] River. On April 20th a tiger was in evidence, when a buffalo they had left tied as a lure was killed. A tiger cub, but not the tiger that killed the buffalo, was killed on the 21st, a disappointing result. The following day, several tigers were seen but not shot, but one was successfully hunted on the 24th. On May 5th, a nine-foot tiger was shot, and on the 7th, a tigress was shot. Later that month a ten-foot man-eater with a price on its head was seen and killed, along with a tigress. Accompanying this account is a letter addressed to Aylmer (who presumably prepared this account) from a friend on Indian sporting matters.
