New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1881. First American edition with a presentation inscription from the author to Rev. O. D. Miller on the front free endpaper. Publisher's beveled yellow cloth, ornately embossed and stamped in gilt and in brown. 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (2 x 14 cm); [i]-xv, [1], 549, [1], [6] pp. of ads, with frontispiece, plates, in text illustrations, and a folded map bound at rear. Light shelf wear and toning, corners bumped, joints starting, remnants of spine label and discard stamp to front free endpaper from the O. D. Miller Library of Archaeology at the University of Norwich.
An account of Selah Merrill's trip to Palestine, where he studied the country and its ancient ruins as an archeologist for the American Palestine Exploration Society.
