Lot 234
TERRY, ELLEN Early autograph letter signed.
London: 29 September 1881. A 3 1/2 page autograph letter in brown ink signed in full on recto and verso of one folded sheet, 7 x 4 1/2 inches (17.5 x 11/5 cm). Faint dampstain to lower corner, tissue repair to folds and a gouge which touches one word.

In this letter addressed to Mr. Davies, the young working actress Ellen Terry offers "A line in a fearful hurry to tell you I am really ill, worn to death by work work work!" She continues that she would be delighted to attend luncheon the following day but must be back at the theatre no later than 4pm. Reasserting her exhaustion Terry writes that "On Sunday night, I behaved disgracefully & nearly fell asleep at the dinner table! I promise to behave better tomorrow."
