[SAILING] HINE, THOMAS A.[VERY]. Log of the Crescent. Record of a cruise on Biscayne Bay and across the Gulf Stream to Cat Cay and Bemini.
Newark, NJ: The Woodside Press. 1900. One of seven copies printed, this no. 1 (from the tipped-in limitation). Period black faux leather gilt with a geometric pattern in gilt. 9 x 7 1/2 inches (23.5 x 19 cm); 38 ff. hand-set type, printed rectos only, unpaginated, with approximately 83 mounted gelatin silver prints and a map mounted to blank leaves, hand-written identifications and hand-drawn ruled frames around the images. Front joint splitting, front hinge cracked through., binding wear, internally minor toning but a sound copy.
An amusing private press work containing an account of an idyllic voyage on the yacht Crescent from Florida to the Bahamas, illustrated with very good photographs. The brothers Hine (Thomas, Edward and Charles) were ardent sailors, and self-published a series of voyages in their vessel The Totem (see the present catalogue). They were also excellent amateur photographers, a skill which they had learned from their father (Thomas's presswork here, however, leaves something to be desired). Some of the images in this work are exceptionally well done. It appears to be entirely unrecorded; we find no records on WorldCat or at auction.
