Minton Majolica Cobalt-Blue Ground Snake-Handled Large Garden Pot

Designed by Professor Gottfried Semper, recorded as shape no. 532
Of compressed form with flaring rim, the shoulder flanked by entwined serpent handles beneath a spiral ribbon, the mouth molded with a band of chain centering leafy rosettes, the circular foot edged with green rope beneath a yellow band, the interior in pink, impressed uppercase mark and cyphers, and black painted 83. Height 13 inches, width overall 24 inches.
Professor Gottfried Semper (German 1803-1879) professor of architecture, author and art critic. Participated in the 1849 May Uprising in Dresden and later fled to London (1850-1855). When revolutionaries were granted amnesty, he returned to Germany in 1862.
