On Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 10am, Doyle New York will hold an auction of Rare Books, Autographs & Maps. The sale offers a broad selection of Americana; bibliography and fine printing; illustrated books of all periods, including atlases and color plate books; literature; fine bindings (both bound sets and remarkable examples of the bookbinder's art); science and technology; travels and voyages; children's and illustrated books; and a diverse range of interesting books in other fields. A special section of the sale is devoted to property from the New York City Bar Association Rare Book Collection.

Americana features a 1790 document signed by President Washington appointing a lighthouse keeper and a 1794 document signed by Washington and countersigned by Thomas Jefferson as Secretary of State. Printed in French, English and Dutch, this rare shipping document permits the Brig Eagle passage to France carrying American flour.

From the Estate of William W. Appleton is a collection of books on the theater, including color-plate books such as James Winston’s charming 1805 work on provincial theatres, the Theatric Tourist, and a fine ink drawing by Jean Cocteau inscribed to Cecil Beaton.

Literature is highlighted by the 1709 first octavo (which is also the first illustrated) edition of Shakespeare's works. Also featured is a fine set of Kipling’s two Jungle Books and works signed by Virginia Woolf. Science offers a copy of the 1729 first edition in English of Newton’s Principia.

The New York City Bar Association

Property deaccessioned from the New York City Bar Association Rare Book Collection features materials from the era of the American Civil War, including numerous rare southern imprints. Other offerings include Colonial, Federal and Western Americana, as well as a diverse selection of early printed books and English and foreign Law. A large group of historical New York materials from the 18th and 19th centuries will be offered, including an early run of reports on Central Park illustrated with photographs and maps.
