NEW YORK, NY – Following the success of several recent online auctions, Doyle is pleased to offer Travel & Sport in Africa from the Library of Arnold “Jake” Johnson (1930-2017). This expansive auction comprises over 350 lots of books and is offered as a timed online-only auction on Doyle.com. Bidding will close on Tuesday, June 18 beginning at 11:00am EDT.

The public is invited to view the books at Doyle from 10am-5pm on Friday, June 14 and Monday, June 17. Doyle is located at 175 East 87th Street in Manhattan.

This auction includes books covering all aspects of Africana, including:

Several items created by Russell E. Train, founder of the World Wildlife Fund, including a set of his privately printed journals, which is one of only seven copies, and other material related to his African safaris.

Important big game hunting titles, including Notes on South African Hunting and Notes on a Ride to the Victoria Falls of the Zambesi by Alfred J. Bethell, and Sport on the Blue Nile; or Six Months of a Sportsman’s Life in Central Africa by Isaac Charles, as well as 20th century titles by noted authors such as Martin and Osa Johnson, Carl Akeley, and Peter Capstick, many of which are signed, and deluxe limited editions signed by the author or other contributors.

Accounts of exploration and discovery, including Narrative of an Expedition into Southern Africa, during the years 1836, and 1837… by W. C. Harris and Matabele Land and the Victoria Falls by Frank Oates.

Rounding out the sale are some unique photograph albums and scrapbooks depicting hunting and wildlife in Africa at the turn of the last century, including a Game & Visitor’s Book compiled by B. F. Bishop, which contains photographs, original drawings, and records of game.

TIMED ONLINE-ONLY AUCTION
Bidding in the timed online-only auction will open on Friday, June 7 and close on Tuesday, June 18 beginning at 11:00am EDT. Lots will close sequentially, one lot per minute, with a soft close. Should any bids be placed in the final minute, bidding will remain open on that lot for one additional minute.

SPECIAL EXHIBITION
All of the books will be on public exhibition at Doyle from 10am-5pm on Friday, June 14 and Monday, June 17 by appointment. Doyle is located at 175 East 87th Street in Manhattan.

PAYMENT
Payment can be made by cash, check, credit card or wire transfer. The final purchase price will include the successful hammer price plus the Buyer’s Premium of 25% and any applicable sales tax.
