NEW YORK, NY – Doyle's auction of Travel, Natural History, Americana and Sporting Books on June 17, 2020 continued the success of recent book auctions at Doyle. The sale featured an interesting group of natural history and travel books formerly in the collection of the explorer and bibliophile Quentin Keynes which he had gifted to his American doctor as well as fine sporting books from the collection built by Arnold “Jake” Johnson (1930-2017) of Bozeman, Montana. Offerings from other consignors included material New York interest including items from the Estate of New York City Historian Dr. Leo Hershkowitz.

Competitive bidding drove the sale total to a successful $142,400, surpassing the estimate of $76,270-117,430, with an exceptional 90% sold by lot and 100% by value.

Highlighting the sale was a rare work from the Estate of Arnold 'Jake' Johnson titled Jungle Jottings by Sir Donald Field, the Chief Minister of Jodhpur State, that achieved $7,187, several times its estimate of $1,500-2,500. Published by the Jodhpur Government Press, 1936-1945, the book chronicled the sporting exploits of the author. From the same Estate was the 1870 His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh in the Oudh and Nepal Forests. A Letter from India. that fetched $6,875, ten times its estimate of $600-900.

A true bibliophile, Johnson was an inveterate collector of rare items related to angling, travel, expeditions in India and Africa, English sporting and color-plate, 19th-century big game hunting, and Western Americana. His collection includes hundreds of rare books, hand-written accounts of hunting expeditions, striking examples of 19th-century photographic travel albums, and elusive bibliographies and facsimiles of major works. This remarkable and extensive collection, numbering in the thousands of volumes, is being offered an ongoing series of live and online auctions.
